Introduction
What is the reason for the
progress of some countries? This has remained an intriguing question occupying
the minds and hearts of many of us. Some scientists think the reason behind
the progress of these countries lies in an element called “change”. The “agents
of change” are the people who with their efficiency and charisma bring change to
the lives of people. Another name for such people is “entrepreneurs” ; they have
always existed in different communities and brought about great advancements in
the lives of their fellow human beings.
History of Entrepreneurship
The
term “entrepreneurship” is French worked derived from “entrepreneur” meaning “to
promise”. According to Webster Collegiate Dictionary an “entrepreneur” is a
person who accepts the challenges of an economic venture and is ready to cope
with it. Entrepreneurship for the first time drew the attention of economists;
they brought up this subject in their economic theories. Among different
theories which study “entrepreneurship” one should certainly make mention of the
1934 theory of economic development by Joseph Schumpeter who is rightly called
the father of the science of entrepreneurship.
His view of entrepreneurs for being
the engines of economic development was widely praised by many scholars.
Psychologists, on the other hand, tried to determine their behavioral patterns.
Experts of the science of management also studied it under such labels as
entrepreneurship management, and entrepreneurial environment in organizations.
Sociologists take entrepreneurship as a social phenomenon and try to determine
the bilateral relations between entrepreneurs and other segments of society.
